Why Does Mackay Need a New Church? Part 2: The Number of Existing Churches

The wider Mackay area has roughly 40 protestant churches of any type including the smaller outposts in the surrounding area from churches in the town center.  It is difficult for me to make a call on the type of ministry and teaching that is happening in these churches, given that I don’t yet live in Mackay.

However, Tim Keller, a leading church planter and trainer of church planters from the US, suggests that there ought to be 1 church per 1000 people to reach a growing centre.  This is a commonly accepted statistic within church planting strategy circles, including within Australia.  With 40 churches to 140,000 people, it is clear that there is much work to do in Mackay and the surrounding area (and in the rest of Australia for that matter!!).

  1. Hi Jai,
We meet in Mackay in 2009. We are now in Canberra. I will continue to pray for Mackay and for the workers needed for the harvest.
